10 Years of Gumbo Ya! Ya!

Gumbo Ya! Ya! formed in late 1987 with the aim of presenting the richness and variety of New Orleans rhythm and blues music - hence the name which comes from the New Orleans expression meaning everybody's talkin' .

The music of the band is an eclectic mix of early R&B shuffle, swing , soul and funk made cohesive by consistently strong dance rhythms.

New Orleans music moves both the feet and the soul and catches everyone up in the mardi gras spirit - which is undoubtedly why the band has developed such an enduring following.

Hot, howling, humorous or just grooving along. Gumbo Ya! Ya! guarantees an energetic atmosphere of pure enjoyment and spontaneous fun.

In February 1988 Gumbo Ya! Ya! took up a Sunday afternoon residency at a quaint inner city hotel and within a matter of weeks were playing to capacity crowds who couldn't seem to get enough of the high energy R&B this seven piece outfit was dishing up.

"No matter how we feel when we walk in here", one regular enthused, "we know we're guaranteed to leave on a high". Those Sundays became legendary and inspired many a young musician to pour their heart and soul into live music. Later supports to musical legends like Joe Cocker.

BB King and Ray Charles cemented the reputation of Gumbo Ya! Ya! as one of the most respected and entertaining bands in the country.

While other bands have come and gone Gumbo Ya! Ya! have continued to perform regularly, drawing consistently huge crowds to many outdoor festivals.

At any of these popular events you just have to follow the biggest crowd and the sound of stomping feet and you'll inevitably find "the Gumbos" cooking up a storm to the delight of an audience that includes everyone from gyrating youngsters hooking on to an energetic groove, to a generation who were probably jiving to the original artists who influenced Gumbo Ya! Ya!

In response to constant inquiries from devoted fans, the band has decided to release Still Kickin' - Still Cookin' - 10 Years of Gumbo Ya! Ya! which captures the essence of their unique live performances, and also features the strong musicianship of the band in recently uncovered studio recordings ranging over the decade.
