

David Thelander
Bass/Baritone
David graduated from the Elder Conservatorium in 1997 with an Associate Diploma in Music and then again in 1999 with a Bachelor of Music gaining entry into Honours in 2000. During his studies he performed in six Conservatorium productions including four as a soloist: Robin in Robin and Marion, The Autumn Chancellor in Dudley and Enright’s The Snow Queen, The Mayor in Malcolm Williamson’s The Happy Prince and Emile de Becque in Roger’s and Hammerstein’s South Pacific.
In 1997 he joined Co*Opera where he sang the title role in Mozart’s The Marriage of Figaro, The Usher in Gilbert and Sullivan’s Trial by Jury, Papageno in The Magic Flute, Escamillo in Carmen, Baron Douphol and Doctor Grenvil in La Traviata and Snug the Joiner in Britten’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream.
In 2000 David became a Young Artist with the State Opera of South Australia where he worked on Gregorio and The Duke of Verona in Romeo et Juliette, the fourth Squire in Parisifal, Mathieu in Andrea Chenier and Masetto in Don Giovanni. He took part in a preview of Graeme Koehne’s On the Beach in 2001 and in 2002 sang the role of Don Inigo Gomez in their production of Ravel’s L’Heure Espagnole.
As a concert performer David has been soloist in Handel’s Messiah, Poulenc’s Le Bal Masque, Male Speaker in Walton’s Façade as well as performing Schumann’s Dichterliebe and Beethoven’s An Die Ferne Geliebte.
In 1998 David was engaged by the Adelaide Boys Choir to conduct the Training Choir and to help found its “Big Boys Choir”. Since 2001 David has also been the conductor of The Eastwood Singers.
In January 2002 David was invited to Hong Kong to perform the role of Kursina in the Hong Kong Academy of Performing Art’s production of Smetana’s The Bartered Bride. In September that year he was invited to compose the score for The Adelaide University English Society’s play reading of John Masefield’s A Play of St. George.
He was recently nominated by the State Opera of South Australia for the Vienna State Opera Award: The Opera Foundation Australia and in 2003 he moved to Perth to take up a position at the Australian Opera Studio as a member of its full time Emerging Performer Programme.
