Desert Lime PhotographicsMatthew Dowling has an ability to ‘capture the essence’ of the moment. His long association with the Outback and Flinders Ranges of SA has developed a keen sense of the colors and textures of this ancient landscape.
I first noticed Matthew Dowling’s photographs at the Orange Lane Market in Norwood during December 2002. My first impressions were that Matthew was very talented but I felt that he was marketing his product in the wrong location.
Matthew’s passion for his work was obvious to me. this appraisal was determined by the varied range of locations and subject matter, a rather distinctive composure style, wonderfully rich colours and by the moods he had created with his photography. I immediately sensed a depth and an affinity for his work.
My gut feelings about Matthew were vindicated when I soon discovered he had family connections with the land and indeed his great grandfather had sold Angepena Station in the northern Flinders Ranges to my great grandfather in 1903.My own strong connections with the land were aroused by his photographs which evoked emotions in me which had not been evident with other landscape photographs I have seen of the Flinders and Outback regions.
