
Nicholas Milton
Conductor
Nicholas
Milton has earned a reputation as one of the leading Australian conductors
of his generation. He has recently been appointed Chief Conductor and
Artistic Director of the Dubrovnik Symphony Orchestra, as well as Associate
Conductor of the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra.
Milton
is Artistic Director of the ASO's East End Chamber series and Violinist
with the Sydney-based Macquarie Trio. Nicholas Milton also commences
an appointment in Sydney, as Chief Conductor of the Willoughby Symphony
Orchestra from the 2002 season.
Milton
has lectured at the Juilliard School and at Boston University, and has
held the post of Artist-in-Residence at the City University of New York
for several years. He holds Master's degrees in Orchestral Conducting,
Violin, Music Theory, and Eastern Philosophy.
In
1999, Milton won the Symphony Australia Conducting Competition and was
named Westfield Young Conductor of the Year. He has conducted concerts
with the West Australian, Tasmanian, Queensland, and Adelaide Symphony
Orchestras.
Milton
also currently holds the post of Permanent Guest Conductor of the Zagreb
Philharmonic Orchestra. During the last season, he made his conducting
debut at the Dubrovnik International Music Festival and was awarded
the Charles Mackerras Conducting Prize in London.
Milton's
conducting engagements for 2002 include appearances with the Queensland
Orchestra, the Orchestra of Victoria, the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra,
the Philharmonic orchestras of Nice and Zagreb, and the Dubrovnik Symphony
Orchestra.
Milton's
recording of Mendelssohn's complete works for violin and piano was recently
released on the Naxos label and his recording with the Macquarie Trio
of Schubert's complete piano trios was nominated for the 2001 ARIA award.
With the Macquarie Trio, Milton has recently recorded the complete piano
trios of Brahms; he has also conducted a CD recording of Australian
compositions with the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra, both of these discs
soon to be released on the ABC Classics label.
