In
January 2002, Benjamin made his solo London debut singing with the
English Chamber Orchestra at St
John’s Smith
Square under the baton of Robin Stapleton, and in September of the same
year featured
in a gala performance with the Tokyo Symphony Orchestra led by maestro,
Roderick Brydon.
Benjamin studied a Bachelor of Music in Voice Performance at the Elder
Conservatorium of Music in Adelaide and was a Young Artist with the State
Opera of South Australia in 2000.
His professional experience includes opera, operetta, music theatre and
oratorio.
Credits
with the State Opera of South Australia include Paris in Romeo and
Juliette, the covers of Quint in Turn of
the Screw
and Third Squire
in Parsifal, Tosca, Magnifico, The Mikado and Der Ring des Nibelugen.
He was fortunate to be involved in work-shopping two original pieces On
The Beach by Graham Koehne and The Beach by Elene Kats-Chernin. Benjamin
has toured extensively throughout Australia with Co*Opera, Australia’s
largest touring opera company. For Co*Opera his roles include Tamino/Monostatos
The Magic Flute, Fernando Cosi fan Tutte, Flute A Midsummer Night’s
Dream and Gastone La Traviata. For the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra he
featured as a soloist in their year 2000 Proms Concert and for the Adelaide
Festival Centre Trust played the role of Cinderella’s Prince in
Into The Woods and ‘Harry The Horse’ opposite Rhonda Burchmore,
Rachael Beck and Peter Cousens in Guys and Dolls.
Last
year Benjamin made his Perth debut playing the role of Oronte in
Handel’s opera Alcina at His Majesty’s Theatre. In both Perth
and Adelaide, Benjamin is a regular concert soloist having performed in
numerous oratorios including Handel’s Messiah, Mendelssohn’s
Elijah and Haydn’s The Seasons. Benjamin has worked with all major
Adelaide music theatre companies and is well known for his comic portrayals
of Herod in Jesus Christ Superstar, Miles Gloriosus in A Funny Thing Happened
On The Way To The Forum, Mr Lindquist in A Little Night Music, Ozzie Babson
in Irene, Bunthorne in Patience, Ko-Ko in The Mikado and Frederick in
The Pirates of Penzance.
